Executive Summary

Project Overview

Kurma SHELL-ter preliminary design.

A Fusion of Ancient Wisdom and Modern Design

The Inspiration

Introducing the Kurma SHELL-ter, a revolutionary design inspired by ancient yogic wisdom. The Sanskrit word for “turtle” is kurma. The turtle’s timeless symbolism is incorporated into the design of the Kurma SHELL-ter offering a serene and protected space for meditation and introspection.

The Connection to the Yoga Sutras

kurma-nāḍyāṁ sthairyam
By meditating on the turtle energy channel, one achieves stability and tranquility in both mind and body.

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali : sutra 3.32

In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, one of the foundational texts of yoga philosophy, the practice of kurma nadi meditation is described. The term “kurma nadi” in Sanskrit can be translated as “tortoise/turtle energy channel.” Kurma nadi meditation involves withdrawing the senses like a turtle withdraws its head, legs and tail inside its shell.

Kurma nadi meditation focuses attention inward to achieve a state of deep inner peace and clarity. This practice, also known as pratyahara, is a key component of Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga and serves as the inspiration for the Kurma SHELL-ter.

The specific aphorism in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali that refers to the kurma nadi meditation is sutra 3.32. In Sanskrit, it reads as “kurma-nāḍyāṁ sthairyam,” which translates to “By performing samyama on the kurma nadi, one attains stability.”

In the context of yoga, samyama is a combined practice of intense concentration (dharana), meditative absorption (dhyana), and the deep state of contemplation (samadhi). By practicing samyama on the kurma nadi, one aims to achieve stability and tranquility in both mind and body.

The Design

Experience the transformative power of the turtle metaphor as you retreat into this tranquil haven, shielded from external distractions. Embrace the qualities of patience, perseverance, and stability embodied by these ancient creatures, and discover a deeper sense of self-awareness and calm.

With its unique blend of functionality and spiritual symbolism, the Kurma SHELL-ter is more than just a design – it’s a physical manifestation of timeless wisdom, inviting you to slow down, turn inward, and connect with your true self.

The Benefits

The Kurma SHELL-ter provides an ideal environment for personal growth and well-being. Whether you’re seeking a dedicated space for meditation and mindfulness practices, or simply looking for a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, the Kurma SHELL-ter offers a versatile and inspiring sanctuary for your journey of self-discovery.

It does look like a turtle shell, very cool. Maybe have the sides come down further and include an entry door like a turtle neck.

Could make the panels out of lightweight plastic or like waterproof tent material. Then make the frame out of aluminum or something strong and lightweight for easier transport. Or maybe you going for a stronger permanent structure and then wood and glass would work.

Great comment, thanks Rob. I will post some more images soon with sides that come down like you mentioned.

Also your ideas for materials based on portability and strength are excellent. I will create some pages that talk about this. Currently I’m working on a prototype using silicone coated canvas duck and 1″x3″ Poplar. More to come!
